The Computer's Storage Devices

There is two ways that data is stored on your computer: temporary storage and permanent storage. The hard drive is the most popular storage device. Storage capacities on a hard drive exceed 2 terabytes. The hard drive has the largest storage capacity of any storage device. The hard drives access time is faster that that of other permanent storage devices. An external storage device is a popular option as well.
One of the devices that uses a USB connection is the external hard drive. An external drive can be used as a main storage device. The advantage here is that the user is able to just unplug the drive from the computer, put in a pocket or briefcase, and take it home or an a long-distance business trip. External drives have a similar capacity as internal hard drives. Another form of storage is a flash drive which is connected to a computer through a USB port. Flash drives have the distinct advantage of having no moving parts, are completely portable, and as of 2011, can store as much as 128 gigabytes of data. Another advantage of the flash drive is that it is more often than not a plug-and-play device, meaning that it does not have to be installed using special software. One of the up and coming storage options is Cloud Storage. Cloud storage is a model of networked online storage data is stored in virtual pools of storage which are generally hosted by third parties. Hosting companies operate large data centers, and people who require their data to be hosted buy or lease storage capacity from them. The data center operators, in the background, visualize the resources according to the requirements of the customer and expose them as storage pools, which the customers can themselves use to store files or data objects. Physically, the resource may span across multiple servers. Cloud storage services may be accessed through a web service application programming interface, a cloud storage gateway or through a web based user interface. One of the options for using the Cloud service ZipCloud. ZipCloud decided to offer unlimited cloud storage at only $4.95 a month which is quite an incentive for new users. It also offers file visioning, 24/t tech support, multiple Sync capabilities, automated backup service, and heavy encryption software. ZipCloud is a feature rich service that includes multiple device synchronization, access from mobile phones and the ability to quickly share folders and files with friends and family. They offer unlimited cloud storage and for a very reasonable price. It is not just unlimited storage they also do not limit the amount of files or size of files that you want to store. This is one of the few cloud sites that truly are unlimited. Large files are not going to be a problem when using ZipCloud. The initial backup make take some time but future backups should be much quicker. The Cloud is becoming a much easier and more popular form of storage.

Windows Then and Now

I watched the video posted from Miss. Malsberger showing the advancements of windows over the years. I was very suprised to see how many versions on XP that were launched from year to year. The advancements over the years from even just the look of the pop ups and options differ greatly. I was empressed that windows vista has so many different options for what languages it is offered in as well as how many programs it is compatable with. I enjoyed seeing the screen shots from the older verisons to the more recent to be able to vusally see it broken down helps you to see how far windows has truly come. Windows seven was stated that it sold seven copies a second, I would of never imagined that! I have never had the please of using windows touch, but it looks like it is a great program as well. Windows will continue to lead the way and I look forward to seeing future advancements and to see microsoft continue to lead the way.

Desktops Obsolete?

"In a presentation in Dublin, Ireland in March 2010, Google sales chief Jim Haley stated that desktops would be irrelevant in three years (SiliconRepublic.com). Smart phones, notebooks, and the amount of information available online will converge to create a different kind of future than what we’ve known, according to Haley. Do you agree? Why or why not? What impact would that have on the types of hardware and software that are the most in demand?"

I believe that desktops are becoming more advanced computers not necessarily irrelevant. The desktops that are being produced today are more advanced than those in 2010. They offer such options as all touch screen with more advanced processors. I do believe that because of peoples fast paced life's, desktop computers are becoming less of a popular product. People are working and are very involved with their personal life's, meaning less time to sit at a desktop. People enjoy the convenience of being able to take everything with them as they are on the go. While desktop computers may not be irrelevant I do believe such products as the IPad, IPhone, and lap tops are in more of a demand. As well as such system software as the Cloud which allows ease of access to many personal communication tools. All in all people enjoy less complicated ease of access to everything on the web!

Microsoft Word Powerpoint

The Application Software Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word allows users to type, format and edit text to create documents that can be printed or viewed electronically. It is a great tool! I use Word for many purposes including work related tasks, class assignments, as well as personal purposes such as a creating and updating my resume as well as my cover letter for future job opportunities. The formatting styles feature available in Word make it easy to set up an entire document. It allows you to create neat and well presented documents. One of the advantages of using Microsoft Word is that it is available practically everywhere. Word comes standard on many computers. You can typically find it on your work computer, computers at school and your home computer. This makes it easy to save documents on a flash drive, take them with you and work on them somewhere else. If you need to do some work, you can usually find a computer with Word on it. Another benefit of using Microsoft Word is that it easily integrates with other Microsoft Office programs. For example, if you have a spreadsheet that you created on Microsoft Excel, you can easily paste it into a Word document. You can work with programs such as PowerPoint as well. This makes it possible to complete a varity of tasks without having to spend time converting documents. Another advantage of word is Document Flexibility. Word lets you create simple word-processing documents like letters and reports and make them as basic or as creative as you would like. You can add color, use clip art, write in a variety of fonts and sizes, and use tables, borders and bullet formatting. Word also offers templates to help you create numerous other documents, such as calendars and greeting cards. I believe that most of us are probably already using Word, but if it is something that you are not familiar with you should absolutely give it a shot! It will help you to create a strong resume and update it with ease as we continue with our education and land our dream jobs.

Reaction to Social Networking and Society

"Social networking seems to have taken over our lives! Almost everyone is on Facebook and Twitter. But is this a good thing?"

Social networking has become a way of life for most people. It is something that most of us do at least once a day. There are both advantages and disadvantages of social networking. Networking has a great advantage of allowing you to stay in touch with friends and family that you may not be able to see or be in direct contact with as much as you would like. The disadvantage of that, is that it is a very public service. People need to be cautious of what they are posting, with out the proper setting it is out there for all eyes to see. As a society as a whole I think social networking has had more of a negative effect. Communicating with others I feel is now more common using networking (ie: facebook, twitter, email, or text messaging) rather then sitting down and making time for a face to face conversation. Communicating has become very impersonal. Businesses are using social networking to advertise their sales and specials, to advertise their business name and what they are about in general, to better get their name out there, as well as to reach out to other businesses they may be able to work directly with. I think social networking will evolve much more within the upcoming years. Look back just two years ago the most common social networking website was Myspace. Since that time Facebook has been a big advancement to Myspace as well as Twitter. I think as the years continue more people will become more efficient users, as well as expressing more interest in the service of social media and it will continue to boom!
